Bayview Apartments | Emeryville, CA

Close to the East Bay waterfront in Emeryville, between Berkeley and Oakland, the site at 6701 Shellmound Street commands sweeping views across the San Francisco Bay and sits a short distance from the San Francisco Bay Trail. Amcal envisioned a seven-story community of 186 homes that would let many more residents share that setting.

Turning the vision into a place meant balancing height, density and livability within a Type IIIA over IA building. The design organizes four semi-enclosed courtyards with green space and water features as a verdant retreat, and wraps the exterior in an industrial-inspired palette of corrugated metal, standing seam metal, various shades of stucco, brick, cement panel and decorative smokestacks. As Amcal's architectural partner, BDE Architecture helped shape a building that reads as diverse and textured, with select homes opening onto usable balconies and Juliet balconies oriented toward the Bay.

Residents now gain a wine room, a fitness center, a club room with a game room and conference room, and a roof-level indoor/outdoor club room with Bay views. Beyond the front door, the Bay Trail offers an easy escape to miles of waterfront paths along the coast.
