Artist Walk | Fremont, CA

In Fremont's Centerville district, a 6.2-acre site lay close to the Fremont BART station and the Centerville Train Depot, along a stretch of Fremont Boulevard known for popular retail shopping and restaurants. Around it, a blossoming artisan community was taking shape. Blake|Griggs Properties envisioned a mixed-use neighborhood that would reflect that creative energy while bringing new homes within reach of transit.

The vision was ambitious in scope: five buildings of market-rate rental housing totaling 185 units, 30,000 square feet of commercial space and a 2,000-square-foot community center for art shows, performances and events. Three of the buildings had to engage Fremont Boulevard and the Centerville Shopping District, balancing a lively street presence with residential life behind it, all in Type VA construction. BDE Architecture partnered with Blake|Griggs to shape a design that reflects the area's artisan character, completed in 2018.

Artist Walk now gives residents a pool, a club room, a pet spa and outdoor barbecue areas, and gives Centerville a gathering place for the arts. In 2018, the project won an award for Real Estate Deal of the Year.
