Mercedes | Oakland, CA

In downtown Oakland's Auto Row, a Mercedes-Benz dealership has long occupied a stretch of Broadway. The Martin Group envisions a new future for the site: an Art Deco-inspired, 7-story, multifamily mixed-use building that will bring 220 dwelling units to the neighborhood.

Replacing a car dealership with a residential community means rethinking how the block meets the street and the people around it. The design wraps the building around a central 6,800-square-foot courtyard, providing green open space for both residents and community members. Ground floor retail will face the street, while amenities and a parking garage for residents are woven into the building, all in Type IIIA over IA construction. The Art Deco inspiration ties the new building to the character of the area. BDE Architecture is partnering with The Martin Group to bring these elements together.

Once complete, residents will live in a highly walkable part of downtown Oakland, between the I-580 and I-980 freeways, with plenty of transportation options, restaurants, grocery stores, shops and everyday conveniences nearby, and Lake Merritt a 10-minute walk away.
